A tragic late-night house fire in the Huguley community has left a deep void in Chambers County after a married couple, Donald Ray Gough, 55, and Angela Jean Gough, 46, were found dead inside their home on Monday night. What began as an ordinary evening in the quiet residential neighborhood of Huguley ended in devastation, as flames tore through a home at 4327 20th Street SW, leaving behind only ashes, smoke, and grief.
According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched around 10:30 p.m. after neighbors reported a structure fully engulfed in flames. Residents described seeing an orange glow lighting up the night sky, followed by the sound of fire consuming the home. By the time firefighters arrived, the structure was already heavily involved, with flames breaking through the roof and thick smoke pouring from every opening.
Fire crews from Huguley, Lanett, and surrounding areas immediately began battling the blaze. Working under dangerous conditions, they fought to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes. However, the intensity of the flames and the rapid progression of the fire made entry into the structure impossible in the early stages. Firefighters continued their efforts for hours before finally bringing the blaze under control.
Once it was safe to enter the remains of the home, investigators made the tragic discovery of two victims inside. They were later identified as Donald Ray Gough and Angela Jean Gough, a married couple who had lived in the home and shared their lives together in the small community. Their deaths have left family members, friends, and neighbors in shock, struggling to comprehend how a single night could result in such an irreversible loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office in coordination with local authorities. Investigators are working to determine whether the fire originated from electrical issues, an appliance malfunction, heating equipment, or another potential source. At this stage, officials have not confirmed the origin or cause.
As the investigation continues, the Huguley community is left mourning not only the loss of a home but the loss of two lives that were deeply woven into the fabric of everyday neighborhood life. For those who knew Donald and Angela Gough, the tragedy is not just about how they died, but about the quiet, shared life they lived together—now remembered in sorrow and disbelief.
